Mistake of the ear (The Peppermoth Variations) offers up a musical crossroads, drawing on the combined musical pedigree of Eccodek’s global dub and Peppermoth’s spacious, ambient cinematics. It’s
a heady cocktail, playing to the strengths of these 2 unique musical projects.

Peppermoth’s patient and hypnotic treatments unfold beneath the voices of Eccodek’s singers, with production that combines the warm glow of acoustic instrumentation with the cool, shape-shifting sparkle of synths and treatments. And the project’s subtitle ‘The Peppermoth Variations’ takes a page from creator Andrew McPherson’s classical training, borrowing the popular concept of ‘theme and variations’ used by composers who would develop thematic material in a series of variations.

Stripping back Eccodek’s bedrock of funk and groove, the singers soar like birds over this mercurial foundation of melody and ambience. The ‘less is more’ approach allows us to fully inhabit the transcendant beauty of these voices from Mali, Turkey, Persia, India and Rwanda.
